Websites – 7 Things to Remember when Building a Website

Share

Having your own website is essential if you are thinking of running an online business. It is a very powerful tool that should be carefully thought of. A website is the same tool that will open your online business to the world.

A website has the power to dramatically increase your sales and it also functions as an effective PR tool. To accomplish public awareness it is not enough to just set up a website. I mean after publishing it you have to continuously work on it to make it better.

In doing this you first have to define the website goals that will transform your web presence from a simple declaration that you are open for business into the very sales tool we were talking about earlier.

Since we are talking about making money from your website, you have to keep in mind that your website needs to be developed and work as a sales and marketing tool. Your website must attract and also stimulate visitors to take action or purchase a product.

It needs to make an impact on people so they will remember your company and come back. Most of all it needs to disseminate important information that will convince your customers and business partners that you are proficient in your field.

For you to get started on making money online you first need to understand what exactly a website is and how it functions. Imagine that you are a mechanic and you have got to know the tools you need in order to be able to fix cars. The same logic goes with building a website. Take note that it is not required or necessary that you are a professional designer or a programmer in order to make money online.

It really does not take a genius to maintain and run a website. All you need to know are the basics. Here are some things you need to consider if you are building a website.

1. Determine the website’s purpose. It is important that early on the game you are well aware of what is the main purpose of your website. Most sites are either informational or e-commerce sites but take note they both generate income.

Informational websites usually make their income from membership fees, advertising, commissions, or selling at the back end. On the other hand an e-commerce website generates income by selling a product or service.

More often than not online entrepreneurs find it difficult to combine both into the same website because an informational website needs to provide unbiased information about the topic of the website, while an e-commerce website needs to generate sales and use direct marketing tactics.

State your objective, why are building this website in the first place? How do you plan to generate income from it? Your answers to these questions must be realistic and feasible.

2. A good website tip you can use is this: Start working on your base. When we think about website building we start by what will you put on your home page, then decide what goes into the next level, and so on. This is the typical way we think we start on top then move to the bottom.

However, most entrepreneurs find it easier to develop a website if you start at the bottom. Start at the bottom and work up. If your home page launches everything that is in the website, how can you decide what to put on it before you have decided what should be in your site?

Plan your pages and the sections or categories you are going to put them in, then write the pages and finally write the home page with all the contents in mind.

3. Make sure you divide your information on your website. What do I mean by this?

There are times when a website has a lot of information to give its customers. They have loads of valuable information but they have a limited number of pages. The information was there; it just wasn’t very easy to find.

The trick here is for you to divide the pages into smaller pieces and put them on various pages. Once you place them on different pages you can then add specific headings, through this the site will appear richer.

4. Your website must lead users to what they are looking for. If users are to find what they are looking for, and not waste time reading information they are not interested in, they need to be guided step by step to what they want.

The task of the writer is to be able to offer choices and narrowing the range at each step, so that the user does not have to read pages that do not concern him.

It means giving the specific information an article, for example a heading on the page, summarizing it on the page above, headlining it on the page above that and putting it in one of the sections or categories that appear in the main navigation.

5. Your website’s navigation must be kept as simple as possible. Users especially those who are not internet savvy are easily confused, so make the navigation as easy as you can.

This means using words that the user will easily understand. Your customers will not waste their time in figuring out how to work your website. If they feel that they are having a hard time with your website, for sure they will close even if your site is attractive.

6. As an online entrepreneur you need to anticipate users’ questions. One of your website’s purposes is to answer any inquiries your customers might have.

In the perfect website, as soon as a question arises in the user’s mind there will be a link to provide the answer. We may never achieve perfection, but if our starting point is centered on your user’s needs, then we can work slowly towards that direction.

Contextual links are that are sometimes used in texts are helpful to users and they should be cautiously written to match the main navigation. They should use the same words as the links in the menus as much as possible.

Even small variations can raise a doubt in the user’s mind and that doubt may mean the end of the visit. If you are going to use the exact same words for both links gives users confidence that they know where they are going.

7. The texts on your website should be easy to read. No matter how well you write if you present your readers with a slab of continuous text, you will for sure turn them off.

Text should be divided into paragraphs of two or three sentences with white space around them. Informative subheadings should be written above your paragraphs to enable a user who is scanning the page to see a list of contents.

The text should be presented with a readable font and in a color that contrasts strongly with the background.

Great post & Fantastic blog! I would definitely love to begin a blog too but I have no clue where to begin. I possess the ability to do it (not that challenging on the technical part) but I really feel like I am too lazy to post regularly. That is the problem, if you start you have to go all the way. However blogs like yours inspire me to have a go at it.
