Effective Sales Copy – 7 Tips to Writing an Effective Sales Copy
Monday, December 14th, 2009Developing a clean, simple and fully functional website is important if you are doing an online business. This will help a lot in making money online. Not only should you develop a website but you should also come up with an effective sales copy. All of these things have its own contribution to your online success as an entrepreneur.
The secret to writing an effective sales copy simply involves writing something persuasive enough to convince your customers to take action. All of which is specifically formulated for your target customer.
You must be aware of their needs and write your copy with passion, excitement and most of all show the benefits they are set to receive once they take the action that you want.
Tell them exactly what’s in it for them by writing copy that evokes a specific emotion and stressing your product’s benefits and advantages. How you turn your site visitors into paying customers is entirely dependent on how well you write your effective sales copy.
It is an ongoing process in which you will always try to beat your “control”. Beating the control in marketing means you are involved in a never ending process of constant improvement to your effective sales copy in order to beat your last highest visitor to sale conversion rate.
Here are some of things that you must remember to come up with an effective sales copy:
1. In coming up with an effective sales copy you need to choose a benefit of your product or service that you wish to highlight above everything else. I mean sure your product might have a lot of benefits for your customers but you need to point out just one important benefit that your customers will receive.
This will act as your “principal selling position”. To choose this, ask yourself the following questions:
- What specific benefit makes your product or service different, better, or special.
- Is your product reliable?
- How are you different from your competitors?
2. Remember that you are writing this effective sales copy for your customers so it is important that you get their attention. This is the most important step because you have about 5 seconds to capture someone’s attention and if by that time you are not able to do that then that prospect is good as gone.
A perfect example for this particular scenario is when you read a newspaper. You tend to scan over the things rather quickly and you just pick on the things that are interesting.
It is but normal that readers will stop to read an article or advertisement when there is something compelling that will pull them and force them read further. They just became curious. This is the job of your headline. The headline must be very simple but powerful, and it must have an eye-catching benefit.
3. Writing an effective sales copy also involves knowing your numbers. It is surprising that some entrepreneurs do not know they are totally clueless as to how many visitors they get in a month and how many effective sales do they get from those visitors. You must be able to measure results and that begins with knowing where you are at present.
How many unique visitors do you get per month? Note that this is not the same as “hits”. Most hosting companies provide a stats package that you can log into and see how many unique visitors you get each month.
4. Your effective sales copy should be able to answer the question, “What is in it for me?” This will create interest and desire among your customers.
Now we start writing the body of your effective sales letter. You can write a effective sales copy that contains 4 pages to as much as 18 pages long. There has been an ongoing debate that a long copy does not sell well, especially online.
A lot of online entrepreneurs think otherwise. Long effective sales copy sells as good online as it does offline as long as it is not boring. Take note it should not be boring.
5. Show your prospects what they want by moving the big guns up to the front. Again, you only have a couple of seconds to convince a visitor to dig deeper.
Keep in mind that your online prospects are looking for information to solve their problem and if they do not see anything on your homepage immediately upon arriving that lead them to believe that you understand their problem you lose.
Show your customers testimonials, and other kinds of proof that you or your product gets the results that they are looking for.
6. An effective sales copy should make use of simple language. Speaking to your online customers in a conversational manner increases conversion rates. Avoid at all costs sounding too professional for your customers.
Always remember that you are talking to real people and they respond to real language being spoken by a real person. Be authentic and forget about for a while what your competitors are doing.
7. Last but not the least make sure that your effective sales copy puts the emphasis on what you can do for your customers. There are a lot of businesses both offline and online who make the mistake by assuming that potential customers actually care how long they have been in business or how much they say they value customer service and so on.
Avoid sounding dull to your prospects customers are tires of this. Your effective sales copy needs to be written in terms of not how special you think your company is but in how good you are at solving problems for your prospects and then back it up with all the proof you can find.
