Research Your Market
Most people nowadays own a car right? If you were to buy a car what is the first thing you would probably do? Most probably you will perform a research on what car will best suit your needs and what you can afford. This routine is synonymous with starting a business. Before you invest your hard earned money on your online business you have to research your market first. Starting a business is exactly like buying a car: You research your market first before you dive in. First and foremost you need to figure out if there is a demand for the product or service you plan to sell. Perform a competitive analysis.
It is crucial that you research your market because this will spell out the difference between success and failure. Research your market by using information that is readily available. You can get information from networks; do an online research, informal focus group and other do-it-yourself methods.
By the way before you go and research your market make sure that you have a solid business concept. As soon as you have a concept, you have to figure out if it is feasible. To figure out if you should execute your business idea, you have to ask yourself these questions:
- What is the online demand? – Finding out about your product’s current demand is a vital part when you research your market. The simplest way to find out if your product has potential is to simply find out what the online supply and demand is. This is done by taking the supply or the number of competing sites for a product or service and dividing it by the demand or how much the product or service is searched for.
- Who’s your Competition? – What are the things they do well? Is there something they are doing poorly? If so can you take advantage of this poor performance? When you research your market you also have to come up with strategies that will separate you from your competitors. Determine how you can make your site better and what information or services you might want to include that would provide customers better value / service.
- What kind of profit can you make? – The main reason why you research your market is because you want to know if you will profit from the venture you have in mind. Profit is calculated after all your expenses are met. Say for example you are selling some bracelets online, which costs you $5 to acquire and you were able to sell it for $20. Do not think you have made a $15 profit because you have to consider what it cost you to make that sale, advertising, website costs, merchant account costs, shipping, etc.
Study your competition, keep your costs down, keep your price competitive, offer something free if you can, stress your value and be sure to take all facets of cost into account. These are important factors you have to consider when you research your market.
