In my previous articles, I have talked about Developing a Website – 7 Things to Remember When Developing a Website. And keeping your website as simple as possible is really important. Making it simple means we try to avoid using flash presentations on our website.
I know some web designers would say that a flash presentation on the website makes it more interesting to visitors and also it is entertaining. In a way they are right, however as much as possible you should avoid using flash presentation on your website.
Flash presentation is surely a people magnet; it is an eye-candy for some however you need to pay the price if you decide to use a flash presentation. If a web designer sells you on flash presentation then be ready to pay the price for that for every second that your website is up and running.
Let me just clarify that when I use the expression “pay the price” I am not limiting it to money but other factors as well. So here are some reasons why I think you should try to avoid suing flash presentation on your website.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #1: It is expensive.
I for one think that the price one needs to pay for the development of flash presentation is expensive. The development of flash presentation costs more because it is highly specialized. If you decide to go with a flash presentation do not be surprised if it the costs is 100 per cent more than HTML or JavaScript programming on an hourly basis.
Also, since you are not the one in charge of developing the flash presentation any updates that you need, will require you to call the flash presentation developer, who may not be readily available at the time. Hence, any updates on your flash presentation have to wait.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #2: It tends to slow down the website.
Have you ever visited a website that includes a flash presentation? We all have done so one time or another and one thing is for sure it is slow. Flash presentation has this tendency to slow down your website.
If you do not know yet, a website with a flash presentation loads ten times longer than the normal website. There are times wherein your visitors need to wait for the introduction to fully load before they can click on anything.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #3: It limits user access.
You will soon find out that not everyone has access to a flash plug-in. If you are going to publish a website that is based on flash presentation then you limit the accessibility. Flash presentation cannot be accessed on Smartphones, internet TVs, and desktops that are under firewalls.
My main concern in using a flash presentation in your website is that not everyone has installed the Flash plug-in. And if ever they want to download what will happen is that they will be redirected to another website which may turn visitors off and chances are they will just close the browser and go somewhere else that does not use a flash presentation.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #4: The relevance of the flash presentation is questionable.
Website that uses flash presentation is indeed “flashy.” I mean it does look good and all that however is the flash presentation even relevant to the content of the website. Often times, websites that use flash presentations are perceived to be long on style but short on substance.
Keep in mind that content is always king. So if a visitor encounters a flash presentation on a website and assumes it is not relevant (like it’s an ad) one thing is for sure they will not wait around for that to load up.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #5: Flash presentation tends to get old and boring.
The first time that you encounter a flash presentation it all seems exciting and awesome. However as time passes by it will get old and hence you will get bored with it. That is how some visitors will feel, your website will be perceived as boring. This will discourage visitors to return to your website.
Avoid Using Flash Presentation Reason #6: Search engine optimization issues
The typical website, which contains plenty of text to assist in what, we call natural search engine optimization. Now the reason why I advise you to avoid using flash presentation is because, if you use that on your website it compromises its ability to be crawled and indexed.
The usage of flash presentation prevents search engine spiders and algorithms to index and most especially, it hinders them from ranking your website. So, using a flash presentation can have the effect of being counterproductive when it comes to establishing a web presence for your website.

This is not the first I heard about putting those fanciful flashy stuff on websites. When I started my very first blog, i took those advice. and I’m glad i did because it does slow down your page. Especially now that visitors can access your website from their mobile I would suggest not using it. Well, unless you are going to have a mobile version.
