Avoid Information Overload Using These 7 Simple Yet Powerful Techniques
Like what I have said in my previous posts, the internet is a place where people can get a lot of information. The internet is actually the best source of information. However, with a lot of posts every day, how do you know which ones are valuable and which ones are pointless?
I know finding your way to the correct information can be a bit tedious and by the time you get to what you are looking for your head is filled with a lot of information, hence information overload. Take noted that it is not just you who suffers from this phenomenon called information overload, I am pretty sure that many other people get this too.
So what is information overload? According to Alvin Toffler, author of Megatrends, he said that information overload as, “An excess amount of information being provided, making processing and absorbing tasks very difficult for the individual because sometimes we cannot see the validity behind the information.”
Let us face the fact that there is just too much information to process these days. People in general, when they feel that they are overwhelmed, their reaction is for sure not good for your business. So if you are using a blog to market your business, your blog boils down to information. Most blogs are of course in the form of text meaning your prospects have to read it.
However your prospects will avoid or stop reading your posts once they feel information overload or what they will do is filter out difficult information and look for things which are easier to understand.
You cannot change the flow of information out there, but you can do some simple things in your writing to make the information you present clear, uncomplicated, and easy to understand.
1. Avoid information overload by making everything crystal clear. You cannot communicate nor tell someone to buy your product or service if your prospect does not understand your point.
Keep in mind that you are not writing your blog to let people know how smart you are. Keep your message short and simple. Get to the point and say exactly what you have in mind in words your customers will understand.
2. Avoid information overload by sticking to your agenda. Start with the end in mind before you even do something about it. If you know the purpose behind your website, letter, brochure, meeting, etc., it makes it easier for you to stay on track and focused.
If you are not focused otherwise it will be hard to recognize your own excess wording. Do you want people to buy, show up or respond to whatever it is you are writing? What are you asking them to do? If you cannot answer those questions yourself then chances are your customers won’t be able to either.
3. Avoid information overload by making up your mind on what to say. Do not be too optimistic and hope that something sensible will show itself as you write your copy. You have got to plan ahead and make an outline.
Think ahead of time the point and message you want to tell your readers / prospects. Determine the tone or emotional feel. Know where you are headed before you even start.
Planning ahead of time helps you stay on your main point and avoid distracting ideas. In avoiding these distractions you are able to write something organized and hence you avoid information overload for your readers.
4. Avoid information overload by organizing the information with the use of visuals. A great way to avoid information overload is by organizing your thoughts. Do not be like other bloggers out there who think that subheads, bold letters and bullets are for search engine optimization alone. These things I have mentioned are basically effective tools for organizing.
5. Avoid information overload by sticking to the facts. One thing that you should not forget is that one must not over do things, do not over-sell, over-explain or over-control. Avoid information overload by providing the necessary information your prospects need.
Honestly, do you think your customers want to know the philosophy of each product or service that you offer? The answer is a whopping, “No!” What your customers need to know is what will happen or what the result is going to be if they buy your product or avail of your service.
6. Avoid information overload by associating your posts to familiar ideas. If you feel that there would be any room for misunderstanding using a simple analogy that relates to something your reader is already familiar with. Using something that is logical would be a big help to your blog and this will avoid information overload from happening.
7. Avoid information overload by maintaining focus on one major idea. Dumping loads and loads of messages on your reader is a no, no. Start with a simple idea. Then build and strengthen that one idea, adding information paragraph by paragraph, making sure that you are linking back to that one major idea.
If you apply these ideas to anything you do, you can lessen the feeling of information overload for your readers or prospects. If your blog becomes an oasis of clarity and simplicity in this sea of confusing information the internet presents then for sure more people will want to spend more time on your site reading and responding to what you have to say or sell.
