Effective Newsletter – 7 Tips to Make Newsletters Effective

Share

Another way to promote your business is by using newsletters. Newsletters are not limited to those, which are printed; they can also be delivered electronically.

Sending newsletters to customers and prospects is a common marketing strategy, which can have benefits but also drawbacks if not done properly. Keep in mind that newsletter are not just there for marketing, you can also use this to create or increase awareness, provide basic information, or create a sense of stability and commitment for something.

With that being said let us look at some things that you can do to make your newsletters effective. Here are a few tips that you can use to make you newsletter effective:

Effective Newsletter Tip# 1: Make your brand shine

Make your brand image shine by presenting it in a consistent manner. It would be to your advantage if you present your brand image in your email marketing materials and also on other advertising channels you use.

If you have not included your business logo in your newsletters, now is the best time to do so.

Effective Newsletter Tip#2: Buff you design

In the previous article I wrote (Email Marketing Design – 7 Tips to Better Email Marketing Design) I have mentioned how important your email marketing design is. To be able to have an effective newsletter keep in mind that it should look professional and at the same time attractive. The following aspects will help you come up with an effective newsletter:

  • The colors of your newsletter should adhere to your company logo colors.
  • Make sure that there is still some white space in your newsletter. In my opinion, a newsletter that does not have any space at all looks crowded and unappealing to the eye.
  • Be sure that you are using universal fonts, which means 99.9% of computer users have this font in their computer.
  • Make it easy for people to scan your newsletter.
  • Since you are sending out an electronic newsletter be sure that you include a link to your website so people can get more information.

Effective Newsletter Tip#3: Try to get inputs from readers

Coming up with an interesting and valuable content for your newsletter is really good. However, is this what your readers want? You have to think of beyond the message you want to tell your subscribers, instead focus on what they want to read more about from you.

To make an effective newsletter you have to involve your readers by asking them what they expect to read from your newsletter.

  • Therefore, here are a few things that you can use to know what people want to read from you. Conduct surveys from your readers and ask them what they would like to read on the next issue of your newsletter. It would also be helpful if you will include a list of topics that they can choose from.
  • Encourage readers to ask questions about the company, the products that you sell, or the services that you offer. Then answer the submitted questions in your newsletter’s next issue.
  • You can also encourage your readers to contribute their own articles to your newsletter. For those readers who were able to contribute, show your gratitude by giving out a small token of appreciation (with your company logo on it).

Effective Newsletter Tip# 4: Use the reports and the statistics that you have

It is imperative that you study your click-through statistics from your campaign reports to see which one is actually helping your business and which ones are totally useless. In addition, you can use the information to identify patterns, test new ideas, and do the necessary adjustments when needed.

To be able to come up with an effective newsletter you also need to assess the effectiveness of your newsletter’s components. These components are the subject lines, call-to-action links, and the schedule of distribution.

Effective Newsletter Tip# 5: Tidy-up your mailing list

The first thing that you want to do to tidy-up your mailing list is to delete the addresses of people who have not opened your messages for over a year. As soon as you are done with your primary mailing list, it is time to segment this list into groups, use your customer interests as basis.

Effective Newsletter Tip# 6: Encourage people to sign-up

An effective newsletter should be able to invite new sign-ups for your mailing list. Ask customers to join your mailing list whenever you have the chance.

Now more than ever is the best time to plunge into social media where you can start promoting your newsletter on websites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc.

Effective Newsletter Tip# 7: Frequency and consistency

Some of your readers might find getting a newsletter every month as something that is frequent. Now, for others they might find a newsletter distributed only once a month as too infrequent and might assume that your newsletter lacks a recognizable punch.

To make an effective newsletter you need to stick to a schedule that is consistent. It does not matter if it is once a week or twice a month; just make sure that you adhere to your schedule.
